Language

Once children have begun to develop early communication skills, it becomes easier to see growth in their receptive and expressive language.

Receptive is what is understood; following simple instructions (“get your shoes”), acknowledging when you tell them “no”, or attending when you read a book.

Expressive language is what they say (and write); sound effects, words, sentences, descriptions, questions, and stories. It’s their grammar, what they choose to talk about, and the details they include when they speak and write.

Children start with sounds and single words, and continue to add vocabulary until they create phrases and sentences. As vocabulary grows, children become more descriptive, expressing increasingly complex thoughts. Sentences become narratives, with details, opinions, and experiences.

Assessments and treatment sessions will explore and address 3 areas; general communication, receptive, and expressive language.
